A new study from North Carolina State University suggests birdwatching can significantly improve mental health, especially for college students. Researchers found that participants assigned to birdwatching reported higher well-being scores and lower psychological distress compared to those who took nature walks or did not engage with nature at all. Birdwatching, as a widely accessible activity, shows promise in helping alleviate mental health challenges on college campuses, where students have faced increased distress since the pandemic.
The study followed 112 students and staff members and found that birdwatching had the greatest mental health benefits compared to other groups. Lead researcher Nils Peterson emphasized the importance of providing access to such activities in urban environments, particularly for college students.
