NC State’s Heartbreaking Finish in Nashville

Wolfpack fans are going to need some time to process this one.

What looked like a dramatic NC State victory over Vanderbilt on Saturday afternoon turned into one of the most painful finishes imaginable, as the Wolfpack surrendered a touchdown with one second remaining to fall 35-31 in Nashville.

NC State appeared to have the game won. The Wolfpack led 31-28, and with Vanderbilt threatening late, Brody Barnhardt intercepted a pass at the NC State 2-yard line with about a minute left. At that moment, it seemed NC State had done enough to escape with the road win.

Then came the final, stunning sequence.

With six seconds left, NC State quarterback CJ Bailey rolled to his right as Vanderbilt’s defense closed in. The Wolfpack’s plan was to run out as much of the clock as possible before taking an intentional safety. Instead, Bailey was hit and fumbled in the end zone. Vanderbilt recovered for a touchdown with one second on the clock, turning what looked like a certain NC State victory into a 35-31 Commodores win.

The heartbreak is even greater considering how the game began. NC State jumped out to a 17-0 lead and still held a 31-21 advantage in the fourth quarter. Somehow, Vanderbilt found a way back.

And now the Wolfpack is left with one of those losses that will be replayed in fans’ minds all season: the interception, the apparent escape, the final six seconds—and then the fumble.

For NC State fans, it doesn’t get much more painful than having victory sitting right there, only to watch it disappear with literally one second remaining.

It was a brutal ending to an otherwise hard-fought afternoon in Nashville—and one that Wolfpack Nation won’t soon forget.
