North Carolina artist Max Dowdle brought his mural project to Clinton, where he completed his second mural of 100 planned works across the state. The mural, located on the side of Quality Printing Plus, honors John Merrick, a historic figure born near Clinton who rose from slavery to become a successful entrepreneur and founder of the North Carolina Mutual Insurance Company, the largest black-owned insurance company in the U.S.
This mural, supported by a grant from the Sampson County Convention and Visitors Bureau, is part of Dowdle’s ongoing Legacy NC project. The mural dedication will take place on October 12, during the Square Fair, with special guests, including Merrick’s advocate Larry Sutton.
