The Carolina Panthers and Detroit Lions could be in for a high-scoring battle when they meet Sunday night at Bank of America Stadium.
Both offenses have been productive through the first three weeks. Detroit is averaging 31 points per game, while Carolina is averaging 29.7, with the Panthers also ranking seventh in the NFL in total offense.
Detroit’s offense has scored at least 31 points in each of its first three games, led by quarterback Jared Goff, running back Jahmyr Gibbs and receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. Goff enters the matchup with 802 passing yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions. Gibbs has also already surpassed 300 rushing yards.
The bigger reason to expect fireworks, however, may be Detroit’s defense. The Lions are allowing a league-high 31.7 points per game, creating an intriguing matchup against a Carolina offense that has shown the ability to move the ball. Bryce Young leads the NFL in passing yards and has thrown seven touchdowns through three games.
Carolina will also be without starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson, who were placed on injured reserve this week. That leaves the Panthers’ secondary particularly thin against a Lions passing attack capable of making big plays.
With two productive offenses and questions surrounding both defenses, Sunday night’s matchup has plenty of ingredients for a shootout.
