Alexander Zverev defeated American Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 on Sunday, winning the U.S. Open men’s singles title and his second Grand Slam championship of the year.

The top-seeded German took control early, winning the first two sets with his powerful serve and two-handed backhand. Although Shelton fought back to win the third set, Zverev quickly regained control in the fourth, eventually completing the victory after three hours and 33 minutes.

The victory was particularly significant for Zverev, who lost the 2020 U.S. Open final after taking a two-set lead against Dominic Thiem. Six years later, he returned to Arthur Ashe Stadium and finished the job.

The championship caps a strong season for Zverev, who won his first Grand Slam title at the French Open earlier this year. He has now won two of the year’s four major tournaments and went 25-2 across Grand Slam matches in 2026.

Shelton, 23, fell short in his first Grand Slam final but had one of the tournament’s most impressive runs. The eighth-seeded American defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set quarterfinal before beating fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals.

Despite the loss, Shelton continues to establish himself as one of tennis’s biggest rising stars. Meanwhile, Zverev heads home with another Grand Slam trophy after finally winning the U.S. Open title that had eluded him.
